Watson, Crew break championship records; Emmanuel, De Grasse double up
Buy #ACTF2017 Tickets A capacity crowd was treated to quite a show on the final day of the 2017 Canadian Track & Field Championships.Sage Watson and Brittany Crew each broke championship records and Andre De Grasse and Crystal Emmanuel competed sprint doubles on Sunday at Ottawa’s Terry Fox Stadium. Sage Watson's great 2017 season just keeps on rolling. The recent NCAA 400m hurdle champion took home the victory with a new championship record time of 54.97. The previous record was held by Olympic 5th placer and Canadian record holder Rosey Edeh. After breaking the Canadian shot put record earlier in the year, Brittany Crew took the championship record today in Ottawa. Her effort of 18.32m in round 4 eclipsed Julie Labonte’s previous record by 20cm. Canada’s best sprinters were looking for fast legal times in the 200-metre final. Crystal Emmanuel blazed to victory in a time of 22.55 which is under the Canadian and championship record. Unfortunately the tailwind was over the allowable speed and doesn’t count for record purposes. After finishing in the runner-stop last year, Andre De Grasse claimed his first Canadian 200-metre title. De Grasse’s time of 19.96 was wind-aided and not eligible for record consideration. Last year’s winner, Brendon Rodney crossed the line in the runner-up spot with Aaron Brown finishing third.
