Another sellout crowd in Ottawa saw Melissa Bishop of Eganville, Ont., defend her Canadian 800-metre title. Bishop, the 2015 world championship silver medallist, ran away early from the field and didn’t look back. With friends, family and supporters in the stands, Bishop crossed the line in 2:00.26, she was followed by Jenna Westaway of Calgary and Lindsey Butterworth of North Vancouver, B.C.

It was a record breaking night in the pole vault Alysha Newman of Delaware, Ont. Newman, the Canadian indoor and outdoor record holder, added the Canadian championship record to her collection. Her clearance of 4.65m smashed the previous record she set one year ago by 25cm. Newman will be joined by Anicka Newell in London at next month’s IAAF World Championships.

In the men’s 110m hurdles final, Rio Olympic finalist Jonathan Cabral limped across the final 10 metres and fell to the ground after successfully defending his Canadian title. Cabral, Olympic decathlon bronze medallist Damian Warner of London, Ont., and the field faced windy conditions that led to a lot of downed hurdles. Olympian Sekou Kaba of Ottawa placed second with Warner in bronze medal position.
