Lalonde breaks record, Hughes hits world standard at Run Ottawa Distance Night Posted on: 07 July 2017   Geneviève Lalonde of Moncton, N.B., secured her first Canadian title in spectacular fashion winning the 3000-metre steeplechase in a championship record 9:37.45. Alycia Butterworth made a brave run at the qualifying standard and finished in the runner-up position. Lalonde, the Canadian record holder, will represent next month at the IAAF World Championships in London. In his first track race of 2017, Matt Hughes of Oshawa, Ont., won the Canadian 3000-metre steeplechase in an impressive solo effort. Overcoming windy conditions at Terry Fox stadium and an early season injury, Hughes bounced back to earn his spot on the IAAF World Championships. Mohammed Ahmed of St. Catherines, Ont., and Andrea Seccafien of Guelph, Ont., each repeated as Canadian 5000-metre champions. Hanging with the main packs for the majority of the race, the two Olympians superior closing speed over the last 400-metres secured each a Canadian title.
