MONTREAL NAMED HOST OF 2024 BELL OLYMPIC AND PARALYMPIC TRIALS

Athletics Canada is pleased to reveal Montreal, Quebec, as the location of the 2024 Bell Olympic and Paralympic Trials.

The event will be held at the Complexe Sportif Claude Robillard between June 27 and 30, and will serve as the selection trials for the Olympic and Paralympic track and field athletes that will represent Canada at the 2024 Games in Paris, France.

“Athletics Canada is excited to return to Montreal and provide the host organizing committee with an opportunity to host a full and true Olympic and Paralympic Trials,” said Mathieu Gentès, Chief Executive Officer, Athletics Canada. “The 2019 Canadian Track and Field Championships was one of the most successful editions ever held, we look forward to working with our national partners, provincial partners, and FQA to deliver the best Trials in Athletics Canada history.”

The Bell 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Trials also serve as the Canadian Track and Field Championship for U20, Open and Para Athletics competition. The 2022 and 2023 editions will be held in the Township of Langley, B.C. Montreal hosted the 2019 Canadian Track and Field Championships, and again played host for the 2021 Championships and Trials for the Tokyo Games, though that edition was held with limited participants, without spectators, and without on-site media representatives due to pandemic measures at the time.

"Fédération Québécoise d’athlétisme (FQA) is very pleased once again to have the confidence of Athletics Canada, said Sylvain Proulx, President of FQA. “Following our success in 2019, we are excited about the opportunity to welcome the entire Canadian track and field community back to Montreal.”

The Montreal bid, which was unanimously recommended by the Athletics Canada Competitions Committee, was attractive for its top-notch facilities, repeated success of hosting past events, community involvement and confirmed financial support.

"After the excitement we had at the national championships in 2019, we saw so much potential for the 2020/2021 Olympic trials," said Olympian and Quebec record holder in the 5,000m Charles Philibert-Thiboutot, who will be trying to qualify for the 2024 Games in his home province. "Last year's banned spectators really left us hungry for more, so I think it's good news that we'll be able to get back on track in 2024."

"In my eyes," he continues, "I also think it makes sense to have the trials in Canada's French-speaking metropolis, considering that the Games will be in Paris. A nice continuity and cultural opportunity."

Marc Desjardins, Executive Director of the FQA, says that the Federation has prepared for the championship by setting up an experienced organizing committee with people of great expertise in recent years.

“Our team will work tirelessly with the community and partners to provide an unforgettable experience for all participants.”

We look forward to seeing you in Montreal June 27 – 30 to determine the athletics teams that will compete at the Paris Games!
