Two for two: Stars grab their second titles in as many days

WARNER, EMMANUEL AND BROWN COLLECT MORE GOLD

When Damian Warner, Crystal Emmanuel and Aaron Brown packed for Montreal, let’s hope they saved some space in their luggage for gold medals. The trio of Canadian athletics stars each nabbed their second gold medals of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Trials presented by Bell.

With a weather delay to start the day’s programme, Warner, Emmanuel and Brown added to their lengthy, hall of fame resumes.

Warner won his second gold medal of the Trials by outlasting the field in the men’s 110-metre hurdles with a time of 13.64 seconds. “To be honest, I thought the time would be a lot slower, with the conditions, so I’m happy with that,” said Warner. “I think that if I can run hurdles in 13.64 seconds on my worst day, then that bodes well for the decathlon.”

Crystal Emmanuel is another competitor with lots of hardware to take home after winning her sixth career Canadian 200-metre title in a time of 22.83 seconds after winning the 100 metres about 24 hours earlier. “It went really well, despite the weather. I came out and executed a good race and finished in good terms,” said Emmanuel. “I’m healthy and I’m happy.”

Aaron Brown joined the group of double medal winners, crossing the line in a time of 20.24 seconds to win the men’s 200-metre crown for the third straight time, and the fourth time overall. “It was a little raggedy, I’m not going to lie,” said Brown. “My plan was to catch Brendon (Rodney) earlier than I did. But I caught him in the curve and brought it home. Another season’s best, so I’m chipping away at that.”

Meet Your 2021 National Champions

Nathaniel Mechler persevered through two days and 10 events to earn his first Canadian decathlon championship with a score of 7,701 points. “If you had told me that I would be National Champion after the first day, I may not have believed you. I knew I had it in me, but I had a really tough Day 1 and really a tough first seven events,” said Mechler. “That’s part of the decathlon. You just can’t give up if you want to have a shot at it. You never know what’s going to happen.”

Michelle Harrison took the women’s 100-metre hurdles title, crossing the line in 12.98 seconds.

Marissa Papaconstantinou ran the T64 200 metres in a time of 27.94 seconds.

Mike Tate beat Justin Kent and Connor Black to the line, winning the 5,000 metres in a time of 14:15.930.

Throwing in some extremely wet weather, Adam Keenan secured the men’s national hammer throw title with his best throw of 72.87 metres, while Jordana Badley-Castello threw 58.77 metres on the women’s side.

In the last event of the night, Jasmine Scott-Kilgo won the women’s long jump competition with her jump of 5.86 metres in the pouring rain.
